Swofford was hired and kept around by the NC Mafia.

He conducted business basically as directed by Duke and the Cheats until it became a sustainability issue. Then he almost botched that, or maybe he did botch it based on your point of view. Once the big TV money became the driving force, he was out of his comfort zone, and it became worse when FSU, Clemson, etc. started making waves.

I agree with you about the term limits to some degree. The next commissioner(s) will have to deal with guiding the conference through sustainability issues, but probably of a different magnitude. The financial and other issues created by Covid-19 may cause some current conference members to revisit their affiliations/membership in the conference.

Swofford outlived his usefulness by about 10 years, but hindsight is a great teacher. One of his greatest failures, in my opinion, was not busting UNC’s chops on the academic fraud issue. Definitely had a conflict of interest on that and should have been shown the door then. But he was so intertwined with the ACCN project at that point and I guess a decision was made by the schools that they needed him to complete the deal at that point.
